Bharata Natyam by Kiruthika Rathanaswami

Kiruthika Rathanaswami will present two days of one of India's most cherished classical dance styles bharata natyam.

Bharata Natyam was originally performed in the temples by devadasis or servants of god, and has its roots in prayer.  The name 'bharata' is an acronym:- Bha-Bhava for emotion, -Ta- tala for rhythm, and -Ra- raga for melody.  'Natya' means dance or drama, as it is understood in all Indian classical dance forms that a dancer must be an equally proficient actor.
