Like other forms of Indian classical(Hindustani and Carnatic), it is based onthe raga system. Dhrupad is considered to bea thorough and deep study of music. It placesstrong emphasis on pitch, and on accurateapproach, rendering and placement of everynote, in order to bring about the feel of thechosen raga. This ancient form of music tracesits origins to chanting of the Sama Veda. Itis a vocal form of music that has derived manytechniques from the rudra vina. Along withthe vina, it is performed on a variety of instrumentssuch as the surbahar, sitar, saxophone,flute and cello. The rhythmic accompanimentin Dhrupad is provided by the pakhawaj. PADMASHRI GUNDECHA BROTHERS arePandits Umakant (vocal), Ramakant(vocal) and Akhilesh Gundecha (pakhawaj).Born in Ujjain in central India, theGundecha brothers were initiated into musicby their parents. All three received conventionaluniversity educations while alsostudying music. Umakant and Ramakant,learned from the renowned Dhrupad vocalistUstad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, and also withthe late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (the distinguishedperformer of rudra veena) at theDhrupad Kendra in Bhopal. Akhilesh, theyoungest brother, studied the pakhawaj withthe prominent percussionists Pandit ShrikantMishra and Raja Chhatrapati Singh JuDeo,and in addition to his brothers, has accompaniedalmost all of the major Dhrupad vocalistsand instrumentalists of India. All of thebrothers appear regularly on local and nationalradio and television. In 2012, Umakantand Ramakant, both vocalists and the elderof the three brothers, received from the governmentof India the Padma Shri, the fourthhighest civilian honor of India, for their contributionto Indian classical music. Togetherwith the youngest brother Akhilesh, they operatethe Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal, India,a unique musical academy patterned on theancient guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) traditionof education, with students from morethan 20 countries.
