Laasya is the nation’s most prestigious intercollegiate Indian classical dance competition, this year, hosted by UC Berkeley! Ten collegiate classical dance teams will visit the the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater (540 Ashbury Ave., El Cerrito) on March 12, 2016 to perform pieces they have choreographed and worked on all year, and compete for the championship title. Laasya is a platform for college students to express their unique creativity by exploring a wide range of subjects through dance; whether it is retelling classic Indian tales from a different perspective, exploring world cultures, or highlighting societal issues, the dancers at Laasya push the boundaries of Indian Classical Dance.
Laasya 2016’s goal is to encourage pursuit of these ancient art forms by cultivating the talents of collegiate dancers and making them accessible to the Bay Area community. The competition is an exciting environment to not only learn about the tradition behind Indian Classical Dance, but to also enjoy the teams’ modern take on this tradition.
This year, we have the honor of hosting the following teams: Rutgers University Natya, Penn State Natya, University of Washington Natya, George Mason University Mahima, Johns Hopkins University Shakti, Rice University Rasikas, The College of New Jersey Jiva, Georgia Tech Pulse, University of Maryland Moksha, and University of Pittsburgh Nrityamala.
