After devotees of Swaminarayan Vadtal Gadi came to the United States from India, a group of Satsangis in New Jersey started organizing and holding regular Satsang Sabhas. Hundreds of devotees could assemble at these Sabhas, which started out in houses before expanding into halls that could be rented. In order to support and expand the Satsang movement, many Santos and Dharmakul often traveled from India to America around this time. A plot of land in Somerset, New Jersey was bought in 1997 as the Satsang movement gained momentum in order to construct a Mandir, where thousands of followers might congregate and pray to Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
