The mere utter of the word Tabla would conjure the figure in our mind, the person with magical fingers, Zakir Hussain. The sexagenarian master of tabla was born on 9th March 1951 at Mumbai, Maharashtra in India. He is popular for Hindustani classical music, jazz fusion and world music and of course the music lovers would be aware of the fact the he is the founder of Bill Laswell’s World Music Supergroup Tabla Beat Science. He has also composed music for films and even acted in some of the documentary films such as Zakir and His Friends (1998) and the documentary The Sparking Hand: Zakir Hussain and the Art of the Indian Drum (2003). He also co-starred in the film Merchant Ivory Film Heat and Dust as Inder Lal in 1983 besides working as an associate Music director.
He has composed music for the Mayalam film Vanaprastham, in which he also performed and acted as the Music Advisor. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival (AFI Fest) in 1999 and won awards at Istanbul International Film Festival, Mumbai International Film Festival and National Film Festival in the year 2000. The Tabla genius currently resides in San Francisco with his family. Therefore he performs in considerable number of events in US and you can see lot of NRI’s in all of his shows.
