More about Atul Purohit

Atul Purohit was born on February 27, 1955, in a small village called Dholar near Dabhoi in Gujarat. He grew up in a musical environment, as his father was a priest and farmer who sang bhajans and folk songs at home. He got his first harmonium at 10 and started learning music by himself. He graduated from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1975 with a major in Dramatics, but his passion for music led him to pursue a career as a singer.

He started performing in the streets of Baroda with his friends for free to entertain the people. He also experimented with different genres of music, such as sugam sangeet, bhajans, ghazals, and Sufi songs. He trained under various ustads and mastered the art of stage performance. He formed his group called Rishabh in 1983 and later another group called Rutumbara in 1992. He has been associated with United Way of Baroda, a worldwide NGO, for organizing the annual Garba festival for the last 29 years.

He has also performed in many countries, such as the the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. He has received many awards and recognition for his contribution to Gujarati folk music, such as Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar in 2014-15. He is known as the King of Garba and Dandiya for his melodious voice and energetic performance.
