What is Patiala Gharana
Patiala
Gharana is one of the vocal gharanas (tradition, school, or style of music) of
Hindustani classical music, named after the city of Patiala in Punjab, India,
where it was established.
Mian Kallu
founded Patiala Gharana in the mid to late 19th century. He was a sarangi
player who received his musical training from Qutub Bakhsh 'Tanras' Khan, a
court musician of the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar. He later became the
court musician of the Maharaja of Patiala.
Patiala
Gharana was popularized by his son 'General' Ali Baksh Khan and his close
friend 'Colonel' Fateh Ali Khan, who were court musicians in Patiala. They were
known as 'Ali-a-Fattu ki Jodi' and were awarded the titles of 'general' and
'colonel' by the British governor-general after their impressive performance.
Patiala
Gharana was inspired by and influenced by four musical gharanas: Delhi,
Gwalior, Jaipur, and Riva. It is particularly noted for its ghazal, thumri, and
khayal singing styles. It is also known for its creative intelligence, beauty,
and power, which are the meanings of its name in Hindi.
Patiala
Gharana has produced many famous musicians over the years, such as Ustad Bade
Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Barkat Ali Khan, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, Ustad Bade Fateh
Ali Khan, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, and Raga Boyz.
