Ritchie Coliseum (University of Maryland, College Park) is a historic multipurpose athletics and event facility with a rich legacy as a center for sports, music, and community gatherings. Originally built in 1931, the venue was named after Maryland governor Albert Cabell Ritchie and was home to the men’s basketball team until 1955, as well as the gymnastics, wrestling, and volleyball teams until 2002
The arena underwent a major renovation in 1997, transforming into a versatile space with a hardwood maple floor spanning 11,000 ft². It currently seats approximately 1,500, with additional configurations allowing up to 1,900 spectators—including 600 folding seats in a mezzanine, 700 bench-style pull-out seats on the main floor, and 600 floor chairs
Over the decades, Ritchie Coliseum has hosted everything from intercollegiate basketball and boxing matches to statewide volleyball championships. Its storied past includes landmark events like the Southern Conference boxing tournament in the 1930s and a memorable Duke Ellington performance in 1956
Beyond sports, the Coliseum serves as a key rental venue for concerts, social gatherings, dances, commencements, trade shows, and more. It features built-in spectator seating, concessions areas, ticket booths, a scoreboard, weight rooms, martial arts facilities, and a staging mezzanine—making it ideal for large-scale university and community events
Nestled along Baltimore Avenue on the University of Maryland campus, Ritchie Coliseum remains a vital and flexible space—honoring its athletic heritage while continuing to serve today's generation as a dynamic cultural and recreational venue.
