The school is part of the Plainfield Public School District, one of New Jersey's 31 Abbott Districts. Plainfield High School was established in 1857, making it the second-oldest high school in New Jersey.[citation needed] The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools since 1928. As of the 2010-11 school year, the school had an enrolment of 1,392 students and 111.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.54:1. There were 809 students (58.1% of enrolment) eligible for free lunch and 92 (6.6% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Parking is available in Lots A, B, F, G, H & I. Prices range from $5 to $30 depending on the event. Suite & VIP parking there is located on the south side of the building via the 2nd 183A Entrance, past the marquee. All methods of payment are accepted at Plainfield High School for all self-park & valet lots.
