Saumya Joshi is a celebrated figure in Gujarati theatre, known for his powerful storytelling, poetic depth, and socially resonant themes. Born in Ahmedabad in 1973, he began his career as a professor of English literature before transitioning full-time into theatre. Joshi is the founder of Fade-In Theatre and has written and directed several acclaimed plays, including Welcome Zindagi and 102 Not Out—the latter of which was adapted into a Hindi film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor.
In Welcome, Joshi not only directs and writes but also performs, showcasing his multifaceted talent. His writing is known for its emotional nuance and humor, often exploring family dynamics and generational gaps. His portrayal of Arun Ganatra, a retiring clerk navigating strained relationships with his son, is both poignant and relatable.
Joshi’s contributions to Gujarati literature and theatre have earned him prestigious awards like the Yuva Gaurav Puraskar and the Takhtasinh Parmar Prize. His work continues to bridge traditional Gujarati storytelling with contemporary themes, making him a vital voice in Indian theatre.
