Early Life & Education
Born Priyakant Sharma on 13 January 1963 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh; later changed his name to Piyush Mishra
Raised in Sambhal, grew up under the care of his aunt, and attended Carmel Convent and JC Mills schools in Gwalior
Joined the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi, and graduated in 1986. At NSD, he performed in Hamlet under Fritz Bennewitz
Theatre Career
Began in Delhi theatre post-NSD, where he wrote, directed, and acted in numerous plays.
Known for solo performances like An Evening with Piyush Mishra and works in adaptations, including Court Martial and Accidental Death of an Anarchist.
Film & Screenwriting
Moved to Mumbai in 2002; first gained acclaim as an actor in Maqbool (2003) and later in Gangs of Wasseypur (2012).
Notable film contributions include roles in Dil Se (1998), Gulaal (playing and composing songs), Pink (2016), Rockstar, Tamasha, and Happy Bhag Jayegi, among others.
Lyricist & Musical Contributions
Wrote lyrics and composed music for films such as Black Friday (song: “Arre Ruk Ja Re Bandeh”), Gulaal (“Aarambh Hai Prachand”), Gangs of Wasseypur (“Ik Bagal”), and the Coke Studio track “Husna”
His unique musical style stems from reluctance to bend to commercial cinema molds; he writes longhand and pairs poetry with music in his band Ballimaaraan
