Shobana Biography
The most acclaimed and well acquainted classical dancer/Indian film actor Shobana aka Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai was born on 21st March, 1966 at Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala. She became an independent Bharata Natyam performer in her twenties and as an actress she has made a remarkable achievement by acting over 200 films including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and English. She was trained under her mentors Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subrahmanyam.
She was honored with the Padma Shri Award in the year 2006 for her contributions towards classical dance. Later in the year 2014, the Kerala government honored her with the Kala Ratna Award. As an actress Shobana has won two National Awards and worked with gem of directors including K.Balachandar, Adoor Balakrishna , A.M. Fazil, G. Aravindan, Maniratnam and Priyadarsan.
Shobana danced Abhinaya, a pivotal element in Bharata Natyam. In her career she has worked with the likes of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, Mandolin Srinivas and Vikku Vinayakaram on various collaborative ventures. Earlier in the year 1999, she performed at the Michael Jackson and Friends concert in Munich, Germany along with Prabhu Deva, AR Rahman and a Tamil film dancing troupe.
