Akkarai Sisters – S. Subhalakshmi & S. Sornalatha
The Akkarai Sisters, S. Subhalakshmi and S. Sornalatha, are acclaimed Carnatic violinists, vocalists, and composers, celebrated for their soulful performances and flawless synchrony. Born into a family steeped in musical tradition, they are the granddaughters of Suchindram Shri S. P. Sivasubramaniam, a renowned vocalist, violinist, and composer, and Smt. R. Sornambal, a respected Harikatha exponent.
Trained from childhood by their father, Akkarai Shri S. Swamynathan, and later by eminent gurus including Padma Bhushan P. S. Narayanaswamy and Chitravina N. Ravikiran, the sisters began performing at a young age — Subhalakshmi at eight and Sornalatha soon after. They have since graced prestigious stages across India and around the world, from Lincoln Center in New York to BBC Radio and international music festivals.
Renowned for both their duet and solo artistry, the sisters have collaborated with legendary musicians such as M. Balamuralikrishna, N. Ramani, and Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. Their repertoire spans traditional Carnatic music, innovative compositions, and cross-genre collaborations.
Their accolades include the Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu, Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, Shanmukha Sangeeta Shiromani, and numerous awards for outstanding musicianship. Beyond performance, they are dedicated educators, nurturing the next generation of musicians through workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and mentorship.
With a deep-rooted classical foundation and a creative global outlook, the Akkarai Sisters continue to inspire audiences worldwide with their artistry, versatility, and devotion to music.
